Chlorella storage methods mainly include the following:
- Cryopreservation
Chlorella is a living algae species. After production, it must be stored at low temperatures between 0°C and 4°C to ensure the integrity of the germplasm. Avoid freezing, as freezing will cause the cell walls to rupture, swell, and necrotize. Within this temperature range, Chlorella can be stored for approximately three months. To store, remove the Chlorella from the refrigerator and place it in a large bucket to naturally warm it up. Once it has reached the ambient temperature, pour it into water and add culture medium for aeration and activation. It can be used after approximately 24 hours.
- Frozen Storage
After centrifuging the Chlorella, remove the supernatant and retain the precipitate.
Add a preservation buffer, such as 20% glycerol or 10% ethylene glycol solution, to the precipitate to protect the Chlorella cells.
Mix the Chlorella and preservation buffer thoroughly and transfer to a cryovial.
Store the cryovial in a -80°C freezer for at least several months. Thaw and transfer to culture medium for recovery before use. Vacuum Freeze-Drying
Chlorella is quickly frozen at around -70°C, then vacuum-dried to remove all moisture. This method allows for long-term preservation of chlorella.
